The coming of a new world – Artificial Intelligence
The world is full of many different forms of artificial intelligence. Voice assistants, for instance, Google, Siri and Alexa all use speech recognition, which is a form of AI. Voice typing, machine vision, and language processing are all common forms of AI. As the spring semester begins, there is a new world that Lipscomb students and faculty are having to navigate. Artificial intelligence is that new world. AI, in simple terms, is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. ‘Missing’ mixes modern tech and mystery
Over the weekend, I searched for a movie that would follow up an exciting day of NFL playoff divisional action. My search would ultimately lead me to Missing, a newly-released film created by debut directors Nick Johnson and Will Merrick that was surprisingly good. Typically, January is a slower month in terms of movie releases. However, this movie excels at combining the modernness of today’s world with the thrill of an adrenaline-rushing mystery. The film begins with a video archive that features a young June (Storm Reid) playing with her since-deceased dad, James (Tim Griffin). Following the emotional introduction, it is learned that June’s mother, Grace (Nia Long), is preparing to…

MLK Day: The bigger picture
Every third Monday of January, millions of American students rejoice in unison as school closes for a day. However, many forget that the reason for nationwide closures is the remembrance of the remarkable life of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. From the holiday being put into law in 1983 to the first observance by the whole country in 1986. The recency of the establishment of the holiday is a reminder that the Civil Rights movement was not that long ago. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech, an empowering message that resonates with many still. On Aug. 28, 1963, King gave one…

The Iran protest: what it means to Muslim-Americans
If you’ve viewed any social media over the last few months, you will see countless posts on women protesting in Iran by tearing off their Hijabs. The protests began on September 16th, after Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, died while in the custody of the morality police for violating the strict rule that requires to cover their hair with a hijab or a headscarf. It was reported that her head sustained blows from a baton, while the police simply said she suffered a heart attack. The protests started small after Mahsa’s funeral but soon swelled all over the country, with women taking off their hijabs in solidarity to gain…

Division, debate and David Lipscomb
This is America- and there’s no denying that there is division. Within the state, the city, the church, and our school, there is disunity. Whether politically, socially, or economically, people find themselves “drawing the line.” Someone might find it difficult or even impossible to hold a conversation with another person who believes something different, says something triggering, or does something that they do not agree with. On October 17th, an organization called Turning Point Lipscomb screened “The Greatest Lie Ever Sold,” a film by conservative commentator Candace Owens about the killing of George Floyd and the rise of Black Lives Matter. This film caused a lot of controversy and hard…

Volleyball season recap: what to expect next year
The 2022 Lipscomb volleyball season has come to an end after a tight loss to the Liberty Flames in the semifinal of the ASUN Tournament on November 18th. The match could not have been closer, with the game going the distance to a fifth set. Liberty finished the game off with a kill from former Bison Kamryn Bacus, with the final score of the fifth set being 15 to 13. This Bisons squad was always one who had plenty of potential to grab a very high seed in the tournament, but they found themselves in the middle of the ASUN pack in the fourth spot. What exactly led Lipscomb to…

Halloween Dodgeball 2022: Who was the best dressed?
The annual Halloween Dodgeball tournament returned to Fanning Hall. The spooky tradition packs students into the Fanning courtyard each year where they watch their peers go head-to-head. This Lipscomb tradition has been put on for nearly two decades. But each time, you’re guaranteed to see something you’ve never seen before. Traditionally in sports, teams are united by uniforms. But in this tournament, teams are united by creative costumes. How could Halloween ever exist without the costumes?
