Vanderbilt run-rules Lipscomb in game that means more than baseball

A game that felt like a crosstown rivalry just a week ago felt like much more on Tuesday night, that feeling didn’t have anything to do with baseball.  After yesterday’s tragic shooting at The Covenant School, this one felt like more of a distraction. Not only for the players, but also for the city.  The tragic shooting certainly wasn’t ignored, though.  Lipscomb pitcher Logan Van Treeck led both teams in a pre-game prayer circle before warmups and a moment of silence was held for each of the victims of the shooting.  All ticket proceeds went to the Caring for Covenant Fund, the link to donate to the fund is http://CFMT.org.…

Men’s basketball takes down Liberty in thriller

As Will Pruitt’s late free throws rattled in and the Allen Arena crowd erupted Saturday night, it became clear. The Bisons had done it again.  Lipscomb moved to 11-1 at home and once again showed it can win the big one in its 69-64 win over Liberty, the ASUN conference’s first-place team.  “It was a lot of fun. I’m proud of our guys. I’m happy for our guys. I’m happy for Lipscomb,” said head coach Lennie Acuff. “That may be the last time we play Liberty, so it’s a good way to send them out.” As early as the first media timeout, it was easy to see the direction the…

Men’s Basketball shows upward trajectory in win over Bellarmine

Just over two weeks ago, Lipscomb sat in the basement of the ASUN, but as Lennie Acuff’s program enters the heart of league play it has plenty of reason for hope.  The Bisons encountered a litmus test today and passed with flying colors in its 69-49 win over Bellarmine at Allen Arena. “At this time of year you’re obviously concerned with your record, but you’re more concerned with the direction you’re going and I think our trajectory is up,” Acuff said. It felt like Lipscomb had this one under control for most of the afternoon.  Coach Lennie Acuff’s team went on a 12-0 run midway through the first half and…

Men’s basketball takes down Louisville on the road in fearless performance

For the first time in 1,364 days, Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team emerged from a contest against a Power 5 opponent with more than moral victories or positive signs; it left with a win.  Head Coach Lennie Acuff secured the first victory over a Power 5 opponent of his career Tuesday night in Lipscomb’s 75-67 win over Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center.  “I’m real proud of our guys,” Acuff said. “It’s a great win for Lipscomb. “It’s exciting,” the fourth-year coach added. “I’ve done it a long time, but I’d be less than honest if I said I wasn’t excited.” Lipscomb’s first basket was a sign of things to come; senior…

Men’s basketball shows positive signs in loss to Tennessee State

Lipscomb fought but fell late in a 90-85 loss to cross-town opponent, Tennessee State, at the Gentry Center.  The loss moves the Bisons to 2-2 in contests against in-town opponents.  Sophomore forward Jacob Ognacevic led the Bisons with 19 points in their 85-point outing.  Acuff has recently enjoyed the idea of two-big lineups and made it clear in his starting lineup that included forwards Matt Schner, Jacob Ognacevic, and Ahsan Asadullah.  Tennessee State scored within seconds of the opening tip on a Christian Brown transition layup, Brian Collins’ team followed that up by forcing the Bisons into a turnover.  That theme continued throughout the first half as the Tigers got…

Frontcourt shows out, men’s basketball blows out Trevecca

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team beat in-city opponent Trevecca Nazarene 87-49 at Allen Arena, making quick work of the NCAA Division II Trojans. Lennie Acuff has been no stranger to scheduling non-conference games against local opponents, and that trend continued in Monday evening’s contest.  Trevecca is located just 5.4 miles from Allen Arena and is the former home of Bisons forward Hank Hutcheson.  Hutcheson played 12 minutes and scored two points in Lipscomb’s 87-49 victory at Allen Arena.  The win moves the Bisons’ record to 6-2 in total and 5-0 on their home floor.  Lipscomb was led by a season-high 24 points from Jacob Ognacevic. Ahsan Asadullah and Grant Asman…

Men’s basketball beats Navy in unfamiliar fashion

Lipscomb entered Allen Arena on Wednesday with something to prove, and they did just that in an 82-77 win against a talented Navy Midshipmen team.  In a rare morning matchup, Lipscomb Academy students from Kindergarden through 5th grade were given a field trip to walk across campus and cheer on the Bisons. The win moves Lipscomb to a 5-2 record and gives them an undefeated 4-0 mark at Allen Arena on the year. The Bisons were led by 18 points each from sophomores Jacob Ognacevic and Derrin Boyd along with 14 from senior center Ahsan Asadullah.  A sixth-year Bison from Atlanta, Asadullah energized the large contingent of Lipscomb Academy students…

Bisons beat Bruins in new Boulevard chapter

A night in which Jacob Ognacevic started as Lipscomb’s sixth man ended with him as the hero, capping off a magical night by sending Lipscomb’s student section onto the court to Prince’s “Purple Rain” with a game-winning layup. After six painful losses in a row and 1,806 days since Lipscomb’s last victory against Belmont, Lennie Acuff and his team finally did it for the first time in his tenure, beating former Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander’s Belmont Bruins 77-75.  The Battle of the Boulevard, one of the most anticipated rivalries in the nation, took place Monday night at Allen Arena. For the first time in seven tries, though, the result…

Men’s basketball overwhelms opponents in home opener

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – For the first time in 2022-23, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team took the floor in front of the Allen Arena crowd. Coach Lennie Acuff’s team certainly did not disappoint the homecoming weekend crowd with their 107-54 win over the Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg Pioneers.  The Bisons showed their hand early, they were going to be aggressive on both ends. That aggressiveness resulted in five Campbellsville-Harrodsburg turnovers before the 15 minute mark, and a 15-11 Lipscomb lead heading into the second media timeout.  The Bisons scoring attack was balanced early on in the afternoon and featured early buckets from Derrin Boyd, Will Pruitt, Ahsan Asadullah, Jacob Ognacevic, and Matthew Schner. …
