Lipscomb baseball claims ASUN title, heads to the NCAA tournament
In a year featuring many memorable moments for Lipscomb sports, another one happened on Sunday afternoon. The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team claimed a 12-6 championship victory over their ASUN foes Florida Gulf Coast to reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015. However, it took a lot of resilience from the team to catapult their way to this position. The club would drop their first two pool play games in Deland, Florida, to Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast but utilized a unique tournament format to their advantage. Securing a victory in an elimination game against the Jacksonville Dolphins, the team would advance to play the Liberty Flames again…

Lipscomb women’s golf makes history with first regionals trip
A historic Lipscomb moment happened on Wednesday as the Bisons women’s golf team awaited where they were headed for their first regionals trip. “I’m so honored to get to walk this out,” said interim head coach Shannon O’Brien with a smile. In what would serve as the pinnacle of a fantastic season, the ASUN champs would hear their name called in the last region announced. The announcement via a Golf Network feed revealed that the Bisons will travel to Westfield, Indiana, for their NCAA regionals debut. A crowd of about 30 faithful supporters and the team rejoiced as they received their reward for a season of excellence. The magnificent seven…

The Super Mario Bros. Movie brings classic characters to a new generation
In the last few years, childhood favorite video games have become movies. A few of those flicks include Sonic the Hedgehog, The Angry Birds Movie, Mortal Kombat, and Need for Speed. However, one noticeable omission from this list is Super Mario Bros, featuring fan favorites Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser, and Mario. Now, 30 years after the terrible live-action development inspired by the game, a new animated movie leaped into theaters. The new film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, mixes nostalgia for adults with enough slapstick humor to keep the kids happy for 90 minutes of fun. After growing up playing the game on the Nintendo DS and the Wii,…

A look back at the special 2022-2023 Lipscomb Women’s Basketball Team
Devastatingly, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team fell to Liberty 84-56 last Wednesday in the ASUN semifinals, officially concluding their season. Although it was a loss by a wide margin, the result is not how we should remember this team. The way we should is a team that reached the 20-win threshold and went high above expectations. As we reflect on this special Lipscomb team, let’s examine this past season and three things to prepare for next year. Looking back at early November, no one had much faith in the Bisons. They had finished the past season with a 10-20 record while losing three starters: Jordan Peete, Maddie Cook, and Casey…

A final look at the 2022-23 Lipscomb men’s basketball team
The Lipscomb Bisons’ season concluded this past Thursday in the ASUN semifinal as they fell to Kennesaw State in an emotional, hard-fought battle in Kennesaw, Georgia. The team never lost sight of their goal even at some of the most challenging junctures of the game. This hard-nosed mentality was evident all year, even more so considering how far they had come. Before we bid farewell to this team, let’s reflect on this year’s season and consider three things for next year. Flashback to November when hardly anyone believed in this Bisons squad. They were picked to finish sixth in the ASUN Coach’s Preseason poll and eighth in the media poll.…

McGinnis game-winner at the buzzer saves senior night
In what could be the last time, seniors Ahsan Asadullah and Matthew Schner graced the Allen Arena floor in the battle between the Jacksonville Dolphins and Lipscomb Bisons. However, it would be the heroics of sophomore transfer guard A.J. McGinnis, nailing a right-wing bank shot buzzer-beater in the final seconds to give Lipscomb the 62-59 win. “I was just tryna get a shot up before the buzzer man,” said McGinnis. After celebrating some pregame senior night festivities, it was time for Saturday night basketball between the Dolphins and the Bisons. Immediately after the tip-off, Dolphins redshirt junior guard Jarius Cook knocked down a three-pointer deep in the shot clock to…

Missing mixes modern tech and mystery
Over the weekend, I searched for a movie that would follow up an exciting day of NFL playoff divisional action. My search would ultimately lead me to Missing, a newly-released film created by debut directors Nick Johnson and Will Merrick that was surprisingly good. Typically, January is a slower month in terms of movie releases. However, this movie excels at combining the modernness of today’s world with the thrill of an adrenaline-rushing mystery. The film begins with a video archive that features a young June (Storm Reid) playing with her since-deceased dad, James (Tim Griffin). Following the emotional introduction, it is learned that June’s mother, Grace (Nia Long), is preparing to…

MLK Day: The bigger picture
Every third Monday of January, millions of American students rejoice in unison as school closes for a day. However, many forget that the reason for nationwide closures is the remembrance of the remarkable life of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. From the holiday being put into law in 1983 to the first observance by the whole country in 1986. The recency of the establishment of the holiday is a reminder that the Civil Rights movement was not that long ago. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the I have a Dream speech, an empowering message that resonates with many still. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King…
