‘Missing’ mixes modern tech and mystery
Over the weekend, I searched for a movie that would follow up an exciting day of NFL playoff divisional action. My search would ultimately lead me to Missing, a newly-released film created by debut directors Nick Johnson and Will Merrick that was surprisingly good. Typically, January is a slower month in terms of movie releases. However, this movie excels at combining the modernness of today’s world with the thrill of an adrenaline-rushing mystery. The film begins with a video archive that features a young June (Storm Reid) playing with her since-deceased dad, James (Tim Griffin). Following the emotional introduction, it is learned that June’s mother, Grace (Nia Long), is preparing to…

MLK Day: The bigger picture
Every third Monday of January, millions of American students rejoice in unison as school closes for a day. However, many forget that the reason for nationwide closures is the remembrance of the remarkable life of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. From the holiday being put into law in 1983 to the first observance by the whole country in 1986. The recency of the establishment of the holiday is a reminder that the Civil Rights movement was not that long ago. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech, an empowering message that resonates with many still. On Aug. 28, 1963, King gave one…

Belmont beats women’s basketball in local rivalry
In a hard-fought contest, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team fell by a score of 77-68 to close geographical rival Belmont. After seeing the Lipscomb men win on a thrilling buzzer-beater from Jacob Ognacevic almost a month ago, it was the women’s turn to host the Bruins. In a reversal of Lipscomb’s improbable win on the men’s side in November, the home team was unable to complete a late-game comeback on this occasion. The win for Belmont pushes them to a record of 26-6 all-time in NCAA Division I matchups between the two, reflecting a significant advantage in the women’s iteration of the closest rivalry in NCAA Division I college basketball.…

Women’s basketball tops WKU
BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky- Following a nine-day hiatus from the court, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team defeated the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers 84-66. Whether it was the turkey from Thanksgiving or the relaxing trip to Hawaii two weekends prior, Lipscomb was ready for the challenge. From the opening tip to the end of the first quarter, the Bisons couldn’t miss. The team converted on a whopping 62.5% of their threes and a sizzling 78.6% from the arc. The squad would finish the quarter with a 27-15 advantage, but the Toppers fought back in the second. WKU tried to make the necessary adjustments with a change in defensive scheme. However, the Bisons…

Lipscomb falls in Friday night thriller
SOUTH BEND, Indiana – Following an emotional, hard-fought 77-75 win on Monday night against Belmont in the Battle of the Boulevard at Allen Arena, the Lipscomb Bisons fell 66-65 to their ACC foe, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Indiana. From the get-go, the team got off to a hot start, building off the momentum of Monday. The Bisons got out to a 7-3 lead in the first few minutes of the first half, fueled by five early points from sophomore shooting guard Trae Benham. However, the Irish would fight back, making the rest of the first half a defensive struggle, and getting some help…

Lipscomb loses tough opener
FORT WORTH, Texas – College basketball is upon us, and the Lipscomb women’s basketball team made their season debut Monday in Fort Worth, Texas, against TCU. In a hard-fought effort against a fierce Horned Frogs team, Lipscomb fell 69-62 to their Big 12 opponents at Schollmaier Arena. “I think we fought hard, but there is obviously a lot of things we need to improve in practice”, senior wing Jalyn Holcomb said. The Bisons came out strong in the first quarter, with a tenacious effort on the offensive and defensive glass. In addition, Lipscomb had strong guard play from true freshman point guard Ainhoa Cea, who paced the team in the…

Graham reflects on family heritage, path to Lipscomb
An opposing team is pushing its way on the attack. They have beaten the defense, and the last thing that stands between them and a goal is Lipscomb’s keen goalkeeper, CJ Graham. More often than not, that ball won’t find the back of the net. The 5’8 redshirt sophomore has been a force all season long, and her story begins 15 minutes outside of Asheville in her hometown of Swannanoa, North Carolina. Even in the earliest stages of her life, soccer was always present. Her parents were both collegiate players at Liberty University and instilled a love for the sport in her. “We would constantly be in the backyard playing,”…

McDonald’s memories
I remember it like it was yesterday. Sitting in the family van, listening to early 2000s hits, when the golden arches suddenly appeared. I began to salivate, knowing that in just a few moments, I would have a delicious burger, drink, fries, and a toy in my hands. Years later, McDonald’s is giving me and millions of others the chance to relive their finest childhood moments for a pretty hefty price. The idea for this clever marketing ploy was cultivated by Cactus Plant Flea Market, a unique fashion concept created by Cynthia Lu. It has since evolved into a cash cow for McDonald’s, which now includes exclusive clothing and the…
