Three amazing adventure books for you to delve into

Republished from Barkley’s Book Recs, March 9, 2023. Adventure — fast-paced action, challenges, quests, battles and heroes. Quite literally… adventures.  I love adventure novels because they keep you invested the entire way with well-crafted stories and great characters. Plus, it’s hard to leave mid-adventure because you want to learn how it ends. Adventure novels can fall into or overlap several other genres, so some of these could also be considered “members” of other genres. But I’ll be highlighting them here. Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo I know I’ve already raved about Leigh Bardugo (see my fantasy books post where I talked about her trilogy Shadow and Bone), but I guess here…

Lipscomb by the numbers: the bookstore

Though there may be less Lipscomb by the numbers throughout the summer, as students are off campus and the numbers are therefore inherently less, there will still be a few here and there. This week takes us down to the basement of the Student Center, to our beloved bookstore. The Lipscomb campus bookstore offers everything from school spirit tee shirts and hoodies to notebooks and AirPods. Rachel Measell, the campus store manager, has helped provide some numbers from the bookstore. There are, naturally, a lot of numbers involved with the bookstore. This week will cover a lot of spring semester numbers. Those numbers may turn out to be higher than…

How to get yourself into the proper mindset for writing

Republished from Creative Writing and Insane Literature: advice on creative writing and interesting books, February 16, 2023. Imagine yourself sitting in front of your laptop with a blank page on your screen. You have a paper due in a few days, and you need to start working on it. You want to start writing, but you just can’t stop procrastinating.  If you’re anything like me, this has happened to you more than once. Most people that write have a few tricks to get themselves into the mood for writing. Some kind of routine or mood that they set up to begin writing. For me, it’s partly about motivation. In an interview with…

3 men God used to save nations

Republished from Bible and Basketball, March 8, 2023. God Loves all people. That does not mean he loves all ideas. A lot of times, God will move His hand through individuals to allow nations to experience His glory. The three men that God used in the Bible that I will hit on are Joseph, Moses and Joshua in that order. Joseph Joseph was the 12th son of Jacob and Sarah. Joseph has a dream that his brothers were all worshiping him through a symbolic vision of stalks of grain. Long story short, Joseph was betrayed by his brothers and was sold into slavery, then falsely accused of harassing the wife…

How to Juggle the Consistent Battle of Judging

Republished from He Will Be Worth the Wait, February 23, 2023. Judging is such a simple thing to do. We see someone whose hair is unbrushed and the first thing we think is why didn’t they take two seconds to run a hairbrush through their hair? Or on a more serious note, we see two kids in class cheating and our initial thought is maybe if they had been more studious like me and studied they wouldn’t be doing that. Now don’t get me wrong; I am not encouraging cheating in any way. I am just saying how easy it is to judge someone. As a Christian, I think judgment…

How to replace the lies in your head

Republished from Giving Grace, February 16, 2023. Do you know how powerful your mind is? Did you know that 80% of our thoughts are negative and 95% of our thoughts are repetitive, according to the National Science Foundation. I think we can all say we have fallen down the rabbit hole of intrusive thoughts and overthink till we have thought of every situation possible. Maybe you don’t relate to exactly that, but every human has negative thoughts, and we tend to believe those hypothetical ideas. The psychological term for intrusive thoughts is unwanted thoughts that cause emotional distress and discomfort. I find myself creating those hypothetical situations and coming to an agreement with…

Discovering the differences between thrifts store and vintage shops

Republished from Thrifting with Emma, March 2, 2023. As I continue my journey to find the best thrift stores in Nashville, I have discovered an important difference between thrift stores and vintage shops that greatly changed my shopping search. The one-word difference between these seemingly similar titles can make a world of difference depending on what products you are searching for. In my finding, the difference can be summed up by one word: pricing. Vintage shops have much higher prices than thrift stores; because of the merchandise. Unlike thrift stores, which often receive their products through donations, Vintage stores seek out/buy their products from sellers with products that fit their store’s persona. Vintage stores…

The bigger the better is a myth; here’s why

Republished from Nifty Nutrition, February 22, 2023. When you go to a restaurant what do you look for? The saying, “the bigger the portion, the lesser the quality is often true.” Sometimes all we want is a big carb-loaded meal to make our day better, but our bodies never feel better after indulging in this. The restaurant industry makes billions of dollars every year, and fast food is the main cause. McDonald’s, for example, increased its revenue due to their large portion sizes for seemingly affordable prices. This fast-food chain was first created as a barbeque grill, but its food was actually not cooked super quickly and the chain put time…
