Lipscomb by the numbers: Men’s basketball at Liberty

This week’s Lipscomb by the numbers heads back to an epic conference upset game – the Lipscomb Bison’s against the Liberty Flames. The men’s basketball game on February 4th against the Flames featured a lot of numbers. The Flames were the number one team in the ASUN conference, with a 9-1 win-loss. The Bisons were the number six team in the ASUN, with a 5-5 win-loss. Despite what those numbers might suggest about the outcome of the game, the Bisons beat the number one team in the ASUN 69-64. Beyond those numbers, the attendance at the game was a huge number: 3,587 students and fans packed into Allen. Compared to…

McGinnis game-winner at the buzzer saves senior night

In what could be the last time, seniors Ahsan Asadullah and Matthew Schner graced the Allen Arena floor in the battle between the Jacksonville Dolphins and Lipscomb Bisons. However, it would be the heroics of sophomore transfer guard A.J. McGinnis, nailing a right-wing bank shot buzzer-beater in the final seconds to give Lipscomb the 62-59 win. “I was just tryna get a shot up before the buzzer man,” said McGinnis. After celebrating some pregame senior night festivities, it was time for Saturday night basketball between the Dolphins and the Bisons. Immediately after the tip-off, Dolphins redshirt junior guard Jarius Cook knocked down a three-pointer deep in the shot clock to…

Men’s basketball takes down Liberty in thriller

As Will Pruitt’s late free throws rattled in and the Allen Arena crowd erupted Saturday night, it became clear. The Bisons had done it again.  Lipscomb moved to 11-1 at home and once again showed it can win the big one in its 69-64 win over Liberty, the ASUN conference’s first-place team.  “It was a lot of fun. I’m proud of our guys. I’m happy for our guys. I’m happy for Lipscomb,” said head coach Lennie Acuff. “That may be the last time we play Liberty, so it’s a good way to send them out.” As early as the first media timeout, it was easy to see the direction the…

Lipscomb by the numbers: Allen Arena attendance

1,681 students and fans crowded into Allen Arena on Thursday, Jan. 19, to watch the Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team take down the EKU Colonels. This was the highest-attended home basketball game since late November when the Bisons played the Covenant College Scots on the 21st. Interestingly, the biggest game this season was not the Battle of the Boulevard game in November, which had 3,772 students and fans in attendance, but the Homecoming weekend game against the Campbellsville-Harrodsburg Pioneers, which had 4,789 students and fans at the game. Last night’s game had the fourth-highest attendance of the season, even passing the attendance at the Navy game – although not by…

Men’s basketball takes down Louisville on the road in fearless performance

For the first time in 1,364 days, Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team emerged from a contest against a Power 5 opponent with more than moral victories or positive signs; it left with a win.  Head Coach Lennie Acuff secured the first victory over a Power 5 opponent of his career Tuesday night in Lipscomb’s 75-67 win over Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center.  “I’m real proud of our guys,” Acuff said. “It’s a great win for Lipscomb. “It’s exciting,” the fourth-year coach added. “I’ve done it a long time, but I’d be less than honest if I said I wasn’t excited.” Lipscomb’s first basket was a sign of things to come; senior…

Late jumper gives men’s basketball dramatic victory over TTU

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team beat the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 64-63 Wednesday night in a matchup which included 10 lead changes. After two consecutive road losses, the Bisons rebounded in a revenge game from last year’s matchup against its foe. Graduate center Ahsan Asadullah started the game strong on the offensive end with five rebounds and four points within the first six minutes of the game. The Bisons would take a five-point lead within that span, the largest of the half. After a slight comeback by the Golden Eagles to cut the lead to one, A.J. McGinnis, a Cincinnati transfer, finished a Bisons possession with a three-pointer in front…

Men’s basketball shows positive signs in loss to Tennessee State

Lipscomb fought but fell late in a 90-85 loss to cross-town opponent, Tennessee State, at the Gentry Center.  The loss moves the Bisons to 2-2 in contests against in-town opponents.  Sophomore forward Jacob Ognacevic led the Bisons with 19 points in their 85-point outing.  Acuff has recently enjoyed the idea of two-big lineups and made it clear in his starting lineup that included forwards Matt Schner, Jacob Ognacevic, and Ahsan Asadullah.  Tennessee State scored within seconds of the opening tip on a Christian Brown transition layup, Brian Collins’ team followed that up by forcing the Bisons into a turnover.  That theme continued throughout the first half as the Tigers got…

Frontcourt shows out, men’s basketball blows out Trevecca

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team beat in-city opponent Trevecca Nazarene 87-49 at Allen Arena, making quick work of the NCAA Division II Trojans. Lennie Acuff has been no stranger to scheduling non-conference games against local opponents, and that trend continued in Monday evening’s contest.  Trevecca is located just 5.4 miles from Allen Arena and is the former home of Bisons forward Hank Hutcheson.  Hutcheson played 12 minutes and scored two points in Lipscomb’s 87-49 victory at Allen Arena.  The win moves the Bisons’ record to 6-2 in total and 5-0 on their home floor.  Lipscomb was led by a season-high 24 points from Jacob Ognacevic. Ahsan Asadullah and Grant Asman…

Women’s Battle of the Boulevard approaches

With the days counting down to the Women’s Basketball Battle of the Boulevard, expectations build on Lipscomb’s campus. Last year Lipscomb sadly lost to the Belmont Bruins 67-62, but after the Men’s spectacular turnaround and defeat of the Bruins this season on November 14th, there is hope rising on campus. Lipscomb has not beaten Belmont in Women’s Basketball since the 2011 Battle of the Boulevard, but the last two Battles have been close. Belmont won last year 67-62, and the 2019 Battle was a mere one point game, Belmont winning 69-68. On top of the close last two games, the Women’s roster has changed since last year’s Battle, with only…
