Lady Bisons ready for new season with revamped strategy and strong returners

The Lady Bisons, under the leadership of head coach Lauren Sumski, are adjusting course with a new squad and strategy. Coach Sumski retains key players Bella Vinson, Claira McGowan and Ainhoa Cea. Jaylen Holcomb, who was out for the season due to injury last year, is returning for her final year of college basketball.   With the loss of Aleah Sorrentino, who led the team with rebounds, the Lady Bisons are missing a key player in the middle. Coach Lauren Sumski previewed the squad with ESPN+ at this year’s ASUN Tip-Off.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Atlantic Sun Conference (@asunsports) View this post on Instagram A post…

The many layers of Lipscomb Volleyball’s Meg Mersman

When many people think of Lipscomb senior Meg Mersman, they often see her as one of the leaders and faces of Lipscomb’s volleyball program over the past five seasons.  They see a 6’2 middle blocker that is the reigning ASUN Conference Player of the Year. They see a former conference champion and a AVCA (America Volleyball Coaches Association) All-American Honorable mention. They see a tough, relentless person who has the aura of someone that you’d want to go to battle with, but when you talk to Mersman about her journey, you begin to see that there are many more layers to her and her story. Little things like the fact…

Running point in Basketball & Business: The story of Lipscomb’s Logan Suber

In the game of basketball, the job of a point guard is to run and operate the offense. It’s a position that requires good leadership, decision-making, communication and setting up not just yourself, but your entire team in a position to succeed. Sort of sounds like running a business right? Well no one would know this comparison better than Lipscomb sophomore Logan Suber. Suber is entering his second year with the Bisons program after he redshirted with the team last year as a true freshman; graduating high school a year early in order to join the team in 2023. However the story of Suber, and clothing/apparel brand “Stack Good Days”,…

Challenges have given Ognacevic patience and positivity as he anticipates fifth college season

Men’s basketball senior forward Jacob Ognacevic has faced what many would call a tough series of challenges. A high school senior season cut short by COVID-19, health issues during a redshirt freshmen debut year at Lipscomb University and a junior year on the sidelines due to an injured knee have all attempted to get in his way. But the 6’8″ forward hasn’t let any of those challenges stop him. In fact, Ognacevic’s skills have only improved. “I’m just kind of using that [junior] year as a blessing because when it all happened and when I had the redshirt, I didn’t want to take a negative outlook on it,” Ognacevic said.…

Lippy Lunatics live up to their name in the best way

Most would think that a heat spike pushing the temperature into the triple digits would stop most student sections at a sports game. But on the night of August 29, that was not the case for the Lippy Lunatics. As the Lipscomb Women’s Soccer team faced off against the Belmont Bruins for the historic Battle of the Boulevard, the Lippy Lunatics – Lipscomb’s student section – came out in force. Despite the temperature passing 100 degrees, the attendance nearly passed 600 as fans assembled to cheer on the Bisons. The Lippy Lunatics came ready, bringing drums, cowbells, Lipscomb flags and school-spirit-colored smoke bombs. Determined to bring and keep the energy,…

From the rock climbing club to a spot in Nationals

When most people think of rock climbing, not many imagine a sport. And not many imagine that sport to be as organized and tiered as other college and professional level sports. But it is, and Lipscomb junior Kalissa Finn is not only excelling in the sport, but climbing through those tiers. Finn, who started climbing seriously when she was 18, recently reached another level in the climbing world. Placing fifth in the Regional competition in Kennesaw, Georgia, Finn earned a spot to compete in Nationals. A fashion major at Lipscomb University, Finn spends her days in the fashion labs piecing together unique designs, and her nights in a very unique…

From Hiatus to Revival: The history of the Lipscomb pep band and its recently announced return

Lipscomb pep band playing at a basketball game (Photo from the 1998 Backlog)

When you walk into the arena for a college basketball game, there’s a few things that will immediately catch your attention. The chatter and cheers from fans around the arena. The mascot that is running around to hype up those same fans. The raucous crowd of students that is screaming at the top of its lungs. And of course, the school’s pep band that is next to them playing their favorite fight songs. These are some of the many things that make the college basketball experience so unique, but at Lipscomb one of these things hasn’t been present over the past few years and has the potential to return to…

Lipscomb softball – making their way through the season… brick by brick

Before the start of the 2023 softball season, Herd Media sat down with then senior outfielder Elise Shewmaker, along with some other players, for a look at the team and the upcoming season. Now partway into the 2024 softball season, Herd Media sat down with now graduate student infielder Elise Shewmaker once again to talk a bit about the team and the season. Joining Shewmaker was transfer graduate student catcher and infielder Lauren Higginbotham. While the Lipscomb baseball team has a roster stacked toward the older side, the softball team has a far younger roster. In fact, only eight of the 21 girls are above sophomore level, and six of…
