“I And You” and all of us: students lead Lipscomb’s latest theatre production
The Lipscomb University theatre department is back with a completely student-led production, I and You. You may only see two actors on stage, but it involves more than a dozen students in key roles behind the scenes. photo courtesy of Kaylie Herpolsheimer The play is about two high schoolers required to meet for a project. The main characters are played by two senior theatre majors. Lorenzo Rivera plays Anthony and Marley Crouch plays Caroline. “The story is really interesting,” says Crouch. “Just to watch these two people meet for the first time and learn more about each other and to experience life with someone else is just a really cool thing…

Three amazing adventure books for you to delve into
Republished from Barkley’s Book Recs, March 9, 2023. Adventure — fast-paced action, challenges, quests, battles and heroes. Quite literally… adventures. I love adventure novels because they keep you invested the entire way with well-crafted stories and great characters. Plus, it’s hard to leave mid-adventure because you want to learn how it ends. Adventure novels can fall into or overlap several other genres, so some of these could also be considered “members” of other genres. But I’ll be highlighting them here. Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo I know I’ve already raved about Leigh Bardugo (see my fantasy books post where I talked about her trilogy Shadow and Bone), but I guess here…

How to get yourself into the proper mindset for writing
Republished from Creative Writing and Insane Literature: advice on creative writing and interesting books, February 16, 2023. Imagine yourself sitting in front of your laptop with a blank page on your screen. You have a paper due in a few days, and you need to start working on it. You want to start writing, but you just can’t stop procrastinating. If you’re anything like me, this has happened to you more than once. Most people that write have a few tricks to get themselves into the mood for writing. Some kind of routine or mood that they set up to begin writing. For me, it’s partly about motivation. In an interview with…

The do’s and don’ts of booking gigs
Republished from Build Your Own Career: a music student’s guide to “making it” in Nashville, February 15, 2023. Sending a booking email is a lot like a job interview for musicians. The difference is that nine times out of 10, there was no “Help Wanted” sign on the venue door. Because of this, musicians rarely have regular gigs. Instead, they bounce around from place to place. Naturally, the material played, pay and length of gigs will differ, but hey, you signed up for this. Since nobody is going to pay you minimum wage to play 9-5 every weekday, here is what you need to know about booking yourself gigs. Let’s…

Do you follow @graciewithacamera?
Republished from Behind the Art, February 16, 2023. Gracie Hall is a 20-year-old photographer located in Nashville, Tennessee. She is from Austin, Texas, and is currently a dietetics major at Lipscomb University. The main platform she uses to display her work is on her photography Instagram page: @graciewithacamera. I met Gracie in January 2022, my freshman year of college, and was immediately drawn to her. Her style represents her personality so well and the eccentric free spirit that she is. Gracie’s ever-present smile and energetic, playful presence are like sunlight. Her energy is translated through her outlet of expression, photography, and I can say from experience she is a very fun photographer to work…

Three incredible classics for you to give a look
Republished from Barkley’s Book Recs, March 3, 2023. What crosses your mind when someone says the word “classics”? For me, it’s books like Pride and Prejudice, To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Eyre and Moby Dick. The classics are the books you hear about all the time, that you probably read in school at least once and that your parents or grandparents probably have on their bookshelf or somewhere in their house. They’re classics for a reason, though. They have stood the test of time, and they are ridiculously good. It’s hard for me to pick my top three books or series every post, but picking my top three classics was especially so. I…

Behind the curtain with Hello Darling — a band with origins as Lipscomb freshmen
You never know what might come out of Lipscomb’s music ensemble classes. The Nashville-based alternative folk band Hello Darling just happens to be one of those things. The band was born when a group of five musically talented people wound up thrown together in an ensemble as freshmen and discovered they all shared a passion for good music. Hello Darling comprises juniors Patrick Armould and Grace Russell, who share lead vocals; junior Amber Sawyer on bass; senior Riley O’Donnell on drums; and senior Noah Haggard on lead guitar. They come from different parts of the country and have different majors, musical tastes and backgrounds, but they found common ground through…

Lipscomb-Palooza – Lipscomb’s first on-campus music festival
Lipscomb Palooza is the first on-campus music festival at Lipscomb, featuring the artists, River and Rail, Amber Sawyer, Luke Bandy, Hello Darling, Kelle Cates, and Garden. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Luke Bandy (@lukeebandy) Lipscomb Palooza came from the brains of Luke Bandy and Amber Sawyer. The purpose of this festival is to intertwine the music community with the general population here at Lipscomb. Since the pandemic, there hasn’t been much enthusiasm for on-campus events from students, especially in the entertainment department. At the peak of the pandemic, Luke Bandy was a freshman at Lipscomb in 2020. He said there wasn’t much of a music scene…

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ brings classic characters to a new generation
In the last few years, childhood favorite video games have become movies. A few of those flicks include Sonic the Hedgehog, The Angry Birds Movie, Mortal Kombat, and Need for Speed. However, one noticeable omission from this list is Super Mario Bros, featuring fan favorites Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser, and Mario. Now, 30 years after the terrible live-action development inspired by the game, a new animated movie leaped into theaters. The new film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, mixes nostalgia for adults with enough slapstick humor to keep the kids happy for 90 minutes of fun. After growing up playing the game on the Nintendo DS and the Wii,…
