Bellarmine powers past Lipscomb 3-0 in ASUN action
Lipscomb men’s soccer stumbled on the road Saturday night, falling 3-0 to Bellarmine at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Redshirt senior midfielder Colin Mackey struck twice for the Knights, while junior forward Teddy Franke added a first-half insurance goal to send the Bisons to a scoreless defeat in Kentucky.
Lipscomb struggled to break down a resolute Bellarmine defense throughout the 90 minutes. Despite generating shot attempts in both halves, the Bisons were unable to breach the Knights’ backline, leaving Bellarmine senior goalkeeper Tudor lordan a clean sheet.
Bellarmine opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Mackey found space outside the penalty area and placed a low shot into the bottom right corner past Lipscomb senior goalkeeper Noah Kump.
The Knights doubled their cushion in the 34th minute. Junior midfielder Kanata Taira threaded a pass through the Bisons’ backline to Franke, who converted a low finish into the right side of the net to make it 2–0 heading into halftime.
Lipscomb pushed forward in the second half, earning a corner kick in the 63rd minute and turning to fresh legs off the bench with substitutions including junior forward Robert Rodriguez, freshman forward Jorge Morejon, and redshirt sophomore midfielder Luke Hanlon. However, the Bisons were unable to turn possession into clear-cut goalscoring chances.
Bellarmine put the match out of reach in the 70th minute. Redshirt senior midfielder Tate McCrery picked out Mackey inside the penalty box, and Mackey buried his second low-right finish of the night to cap the scoring at 3–0.
Kump saw action on the night but finished without registering a save as Bellarmine protected its lead through the closing whistle.
Physicality ran high throughout the night as referee warnings piled up. Lipscomb accumulated five yellow cards, issued to freshman midfielder Tobias Sosa, freshman midfielder sophmore Mathew Arias Sinclair, sophomore forward Mateo Secaira, freshman defender Kylian Karsenty, and sophomore defender Yohan Franchi, while Bellarmine’s junior defender Martin Cadagan drew a booking in the 53rd minute.
The Bisons will look to bounce back quickly as they step out of conference action for a midweek non-conference road matchup. Lipscomb travels to Evansville, Indiana, on Tuesday, Oct. 27, to face the University of Evansville at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
