Lipscomb by the numbers: IT
This week’s Lipscomb by the numbers heads over to the IT department. IT helps students with various tech problems, from internet issues to school software malfunctions. They assist students mainly through help desk tickets and phone calls. How many students do they help, though? In the fall 2022 semester, IT answered 1,920 phone calls. So far this semester, they have already answered over 200. Since their new help desk ticketing software went live on June 15th, the IT department has answered 5,753 help desk tickets. The fall 2022 semester saw 3,401 help desk tickets answered. Already this spring semester has seen 941 tickets submitted and answered. And even as of…

The countdown to baseball season begins
The Lipscomb Bisons have been training hard during the offseason, and in early February they’ll have a chance to prove it. The 37-man roster features only five freshman and a large mix of upperclassmen. The team is dominated by juniors, with 16 on the roster; there are three graduate students, two fifth-years and one senior. Junior left-handed pitcher Logan Van Treeck said is excited for the upcoming season. “We lost some big pieces — seniors who got drafted or signed a pro ball contract,” Van Treeck said. “So coming into this season — man, we lost a lot of great dudes. But just seeing this fall, we have come back…

Lipscomb by the numbers: student stats
This week’s Lipscomb by the numbers will be taking a look at Lipscomb’s enrollment and some of the student stats. Lipscomb has quite a few numbers around campus, so we’ll be looking at some of those today. As of the Fall 2022 semester, Lipscomb had 2,941 undergraduate students enrolled and 1,735 graduate students enrolled in Lipscomb’s graduate program. There are students from all over the United States and from 52 countries represented on campus. There are 283 full time faculty members and the student to faculty ratio is 14:1. Those numbers are from Lipscomb’s website, and the following numbers are from some other college stats websites. According to the other…

Lipscomb by the numbers: Allen Arena attendance
1,681 students and fans crowded into Allen Arena on Thursday, Jan. 19, to watch the Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team take down the EKU Colonels. This was the highest-attended home basketball game since late November when the Bisons played the Covenant College Scots on the 21st. Interestingly, the biggest game this season was not the Battle of the Boulevard game in November, which had 3,772 students and fans in attendance, but the Homecoming weekend game against the Campbellsville-Harrodsburg Pioneers, which had 4,789 students and fans at the game. Last night’s game had the fourth-highest attendance of the season, even passing the attendance at the Navy game – although not by…

Walt Leaver looks back at inception, evolution of Lighting of the Green
Walt Leaver recently announced he would be retiring from his position as Lipscomb’s vice president of university relations, a role he has held since 1997. Leaver has been a cornerstone of many Lipscomb events, but chief among them is the annual Lighting of the Green. He was heavily responsible for the creation of the Christmastime event in 2005 and has been involved in every one since. In an interview with Herd Media after this year’s event, he walked down memory lane, talking about past Lightings, the event’s inception and his favorite memories. We had a desire to plan some kind of a thank-you event for the Lipscomb family and kind…

Battle ends in defeat: a close game but a sad end
The Bisons were ready. They had a chance to take the Battle of the Boulevard win from the Belmont Bruins. And if they did, they would have beaten the Bruins in both men’s and women’s basketball, a miraculous year. The Bruins were ready too. They were not about to let the Bisons embarrass them again. The stage was set. The Battle was about to begin.

Women’s Battle of the Boulevard approaches
With the days counting down to the Women’s Basketball Battle of the Boulevard, expectations build on Lipscomb’s campus. Last year Lipscomb sadly lost to the Belmont Bruins 67-62, but after the Men’s spectacular turnaround and defeat of the Bruins this season on November 14th, there is hope rising on campus. Lipscomb has not beaten Belmont in Women’s Basketball since the 2011 Battle of the Boulevard, but the last two Battles have been close. Belmont won last year 67-62, and the 2019 Battle was a mere one point game, Belmont winning 69-68. On top of the close last two games, the Women’s roster has changed since last year’s Battle, with only…

Boulevard Breakthrough: Behind the scenes of the Bisons’ long-awaited win
Last night, the Lipscomb Bisons faced off against the Belmont Bruins in the historic men’s basketball Battle of the Boulevard. The Bisons lost to the Bruins in 2021. Students across Lipscomb’s campus were hoping for a different outcome this year. And if not that, then at least a closer game. The Bisons, however, did not disappoint.

Bisons buoyed in advance of ASUN final
By any metric, 2022 has been a highly successful year for the Lipscomb men’s soccer program. Every individual ASUN Conference superlative award was clinched by Lipscomb personnel this season, and the Bisons finished their regular season with only two losses and two draws. In the process, the Bisons lost only one conference game and earned a 12th-place ranking nationally. The Bisons ground out a 1-0 win against FGCU this Monday to claim their spot in the ASUN Final Saturday, beating one of the two teams they had lost to during the regular season. With confidence and national relevance at an all-time high, there is understandable confidence among the squad. “I…

How are you voting at college?
Election Day is fast approaching this November, and for college students away from home – especially Freshmen – there are new considerations. Many states have changed their voting laws following the 2020 Presidential Election. Mail-in voting is more restrictive, and early voting windows are shorter in many locations. That leaves the question – as the Midterms approach this November – for out-of-state college students: how are you voting while away at college? Or rather, are you even planning on voting at college? Some states, such as Iowa, shortened the window for early voting. Other states updated their ID laws, such as Montana requiring a photo on any sort of identification…
