Tar Heels shuts out Bisons 3-0 in non-conference match

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team fell to the University of North Carolina 3-0 on Tuesday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

The Bisons were shut out in the non-conference match, with the Tar Heels scoring two early goals to take command of the game. Lipscomb sophomore goalkeeper Alex Kara recorded four saves on the night.

“I think we had too much respect for them,” said Lipscomb Head Coach Charles Morrow. “I think it’s a case tonight of, we got beat by a logo. We played a little too tentative, too scared of the opponent.”

The Tar Heels quickly established their presence, scoring just four minutes into the game on a strike from junior defender Luca Nikolai. Nikolai scored his second goal in the 18th minute, assisted by sophomore forward Bertil Regard Hansen, putting the Bisons in an immediate two-goal hole.

Morrow noted that the team’s competition level was missing, particularly in the first half. The coach emphasized that the team gave the opponent too much time and space, allowing the Tar Heels to make them pay.

“It was just a lack of focus,” said Captain senior defender Daniel Stampatori. “I know the talent we got in this group, and tonight, we just didn’t show that. Going forward, we got to look back at the drawing board and work through some more tactics.”

The Tar Heels solidified the victory late in the game when Hansen found the net in the 85th minute. UNC senior goalkeeper Andrew Cordes was not tested, recording zero saves on the night.

The Bisons will return to ASUN conference play when they travel to Conway, Arkansas, to face Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11.
