WBB ends ASUN championship run battling Austin Peay

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team took on the Austin Peay Governors in the first round of the ASUN tournament, at noon in Jacksonville, Florida. They fell to the Govs 56-63, shut down by Austin Peay’s defense.

The Governors held the Bisons to 33% in the first quarter, for both field goals and the 3-pointers, and 21.43% for field goals in the second quarter, 0% from three.

The Bisons fought in both quarters of the first half, but they were unable to shoot around the Governors. Attempting 21 shots in the second quarter, the Bisons landed three. By the close of the first half, they were trailing 16-28.

Unwilling to sit and take it, the girls rallied coming out of the locker rooms and into the second half, making 83% for field goals and 75% from the three point line in the third quarter. Both were better numbers than the Governors’ third quarter percentages. By the end of the third, they’d managed to bring their numbers up to just eight points behind the Govs, 42-50.

Senior guard Molly Heard scored 14 points in the third quarter. Among those, she sank three consecutive layups in just over a minute, in the last 2:09 of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Govs held the Bisons to just 28.57% in field goal percentage and 50% for 3-pointers. Heard started the quarter off making a 3-pointer, building the Bisons’ momentum. Junior guard McKayla Miller followed off of that with a three of her own, bringing the Bisons within four.

As the Governors drew ahead, Miller would make another three, bringing the score within four once again. Yet eight free throws by the Governors extended their lead, and were the final nail for the Bisons.

In both quarters of the second half, the Bisons scored more than the Governors, but it wasn’t enough. Their second quarter performance had tanked their chances, as they scored only six points to the Govs’ twelve.

The Bisons closed out their season 10-20, with a 7-11 conference record.
