Illustration Workshop: A look into fashion art

To kick off Fashion Week, the Department of Fashion started with an educational workshop on fashion illustration.

Carrie Mills gave a hands-on presentation about the basics of fashion illustration.

Each student was given a work pad to draw alongside Carrie. Posters of Joe Eula’s designs were on display as a reference for the style they are trying to learn.

Carrie had the students draw from a volunteer model. She also provided other images to capture the pose and outfit.

“I like how it’s encouraged for us to be loose. We focus on the general movement of the shapes and the clothes,” said Eleanor Elliott, a fashion design major.

The experience was open and collaborative. Carrie asked questions about the students’ experience in fashion illustration, and it wasn’t long before students started to openly talk to Carrie and each other about the art they were making.

The students attending were all different years of fashion design and other majors. Some of them had taken an illustration class before, but most of them were learning on the spot.
