The Bisons vs. Volunteers, a rivalry!

On March 14th the Bisons travel to Knoxville for their date with the currently third ranked, Tennessee Volunteers. This will be the 15th time the Bisons and Vols face off. According to the University of Tennessee Athletics web page, The Volunteers won 12 of 14 matchups. Sidenote: if you look at the Lipscomb Athletics page it lists only played 12 games total against Tennessee. The discrepancy Lipscomb Athletics page looks back to when we moved to Division 1 of the NCAA in 2003. A Lopsided History The first-ever matchup between the Bisons and the Vols took place in 1979 at Nashville where the Bisons fell to the Vols 5-3. Three…

A look back at the special 2022-2023 Lipscomb Women’s Basketball Team

Devastatingly, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team fell to Liberty 84-56 last Wednesday in the ASUN semifinals, officially concluding their season. Although it was a loss by a wide margin, the result is not how we should remember this team. The way we should is a team that reached the 20-win threshold and went high above expectations. As we reflect on this special Lipscomb team, let’s examine this past season and three things to prepare for next year. Looking back at early November, no one had much faith in the Bisons. They had finished the past season with a 10-20 record while losing three starters: Jordan Peete, Maddie Cook, and Casey…

A final look at the 2022-23 Lipscomb men’s basketball team

The Lipscomb Bisons’ season concluded this past Thursday in the ASUN semifinal as they fell to Kennesaw State in an emotional, hard-fought battle in Kennesaw, Georgia. The team never lost sight of their goal even at some of the most challenging junctures of the game. This hard-nosed mentality was evident all year, even more so considering how far they had come. Before we bid farewell to this team, let’s reflect on this year’s season and consider three things for next year. Flashback to November when hardly anyone believed in this Bisons squad. They were picked to finish sixth in the ASUN Coach’s Preseason poll and eighth in the media poll.…

Lipscomb falls to FGCU in regular-season finale

A close game between the Lady Bisons and Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday night turned into the biggest Lipscomb loss of the women’s season. The Eagles won 101-59 in both teams’ final regular-season game. This was not how anyone expected the Lady Bisons’ final game of the season to go. FGCU (29-3, 17-1 in the ASUN) is No. 24 in the nation and enter the postseason first in the ASUN. The Lady Bisons (19-11, 13-5) are seeded third in the conference and have a first-round bye in the ASUN championship.  The Lady Bisons led the Eagles 25-20 by the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles would rally back tremendously…

Cea’s Story: From Spain to the States

Ainhoa Cea’s journey to play basketball at Lipscomb is one unlike any other. The freshman point guard from Spain didn’t even know of Lipscomb until a few months before the school year started. Hailing from Hondarribia, Spain, Cea decided at the end of her senior year in high school she wanted to try to play college hoops in the United States. “I didn’t even think about coming to the States at all to play basketball while I was in high school,” Cea said. Even though coming to America for basketball was never on her agenda, Cea’s interest peaked quickly. “By the time it was April [of my senior year], I…

Bisons beat UIC Flames in weekend series 2-1

Despite a slow start on Friday, the Lipscomb Bisons rounded out this weekend with a 2-1 series win against the University of Illinois Chicago Flames. Friday’s game did not go as expected. The game began with no runs for either the Flames or the Bisons in the first inning. UIC came close, loading the bases, but junior, left-handed starting pitcher Michael Dunkelberger struck out the next two batters and retired the side. In the top of the second, Flames redshirt sophomore outfielder AJ Henkle smacked a ball clear over the centerfield fence for a solo home run, giving them the lead in the game. The dinger was the only score…

McGinnis game-winner at the buzzer saves senior night

In what could be the last time, seniors Ahsan Asadullah and Matthew Schner graced the Allen Arena floor in the battle between the Jacksonville Dolphins and Lipscomb Bisons. However, it would be the heroics of sophomore transfer guard A.J. McGinnis, nailing a right-wing bank shot buzzer-beater in the final seconds to give Lipscomb the 62-59 win. “I was just tryna get a shot up before the buzzer man,” said McGinnis. After celebrating some pregame senior night festivities, it was time for Saturday night basketball between the Dolphins and the Bisons. Immediately after the tip-off, Dolphins redshirt junior guard Jarius Cook knocked down a three-pointer deep in the shot clock to…
