WNWE gets “Halloweek” makeover during Haunted High Rise

Wednesday Nights We Eat (WNWE), a well-known weekly event in High Rise, took a spooky turn this Wednesday for “Halloweek.”

Common WNWE traditions still occurred, such as $1 barbecue sandwiches and live music, but what really made the night special was the haunted house.

Throughout the night, students dared to enter the haunted house hosted by the High Rise RAs, and screams could be heard throughout the building. This year’s theme revolved around aliens.

Before entering the haunted house, all participants were required to sign a waiver. Then they were led to the first part of the experience.

Students were shown footage of a camera man entering the haunted house, and eventually falling victim to the aliens that took over the house. The video featured the “stars coming down” to symbolize the aliens within the house, and eventually the text switched to “the stars are here,” before the aliens attacked the cameraman.

After seeing this footage, students were ushered into the same haunted house from the video. They were tasked with documenting the house so that others could learn what happened.

Inside the house, which spread throughout the first floor, flashing lights, jump scares and intense chases caused screams that could be heard by everyone waiting to enter.

Freshman Jana Marcum expressed said there were moments when she was genuinely scared by actors within the house. However, she still loved it. “I thought it was a really fun experience,” Marcum said.

After completing the haunted house, students had a chance to wind down in the lobby. Everyone who made it through the scares received a voucher for a free ice cream sandwich, and they could enjoy music put on by Music.com.

Halloweek continued with a Harry Potter event on Thursday night, and will conclude with a highly anticipated dodgeball tournament in Fanning Hall on Friday.
