Students eat the heat at AASA’s Spicy Noodle Challenge

Tuesday evening, the smell of ramen noodles filled Bison Square as twelve students competed in an event hosted by the Asian American Student Association (AASA) to see who could consume a plate of spicy noodles the quickest.

David Ling, a freshman mechanical engineering major from Nashville, had balanced expectations about his chances.

“I’m confident about the spiciness, but I don’t know how fast I’ll be able to eat it. I’m pretty confident, but not 100%,” said Ling.

First place ultimately went to J.D. Francis, a senior pre-law student from Mount Juliet.

“When it comes to food, I am a champion,” Francis said after finishing his plate and being declared the winner.

Mazen Al Abdallah came in second place, and Joshua Mendez followed in third.

The Spicy Noodle Challenge marked part of this year’s Welcome to Our World week, a seven-day-long celebration of the various cultures that make up the diverse student demographic on campus.
