Students celebrate Hispanic culture at”Salsa en el Shamblin”

Though originally planned to take place in Bison Square, “Salsa en el Shamblin” was moved into Shamblin Theatre on Friday night following a sudden rain forecast.

Regardless of the unexpected change in plans, a large group of students showed up to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with a salsa dance.

In the first half of the event, two instructors helped students learn salsa basics for both solo and partnered dancing. In the second half of the event, students were free to mingle and practice their newly developed salsa skills.

One of the event’s features was a table with three traditional Mexican drinks: pineapple juice, horchata and hibiscus juice. The beverages served as conversation starters throughout the evening.

Josue Rivas, one of the students who helped organize the event, was excited regardless of the venue change.

“I feel like the school’s got a good community,” he said. “They’ve got good people, and we all like having fun.”

Despite being relocated, “Salsa en el Shamblin” continued to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with salsa music and culture.
