Lipscomb honors Dolly Parton’s legacy

Change-maker, advocate, and inspiration–these are just a few of the words Lipscomb students use to describe Dolly Parton.

Tuesday, news of Parton’s passing spread across campus. shocking students. From fashion students inspired by her outfits, to music arts majors who learned about country music from her, Parton played a huge role in the lives of Lipscomb students. 

Parton had a special place in the hearts of students and professors. In 2023, Parton created a special exhibit in collaboration with Lipscomb’s fashion department. “Dolly Parton and the Makers: My Life In Rhinestones” put the singer-songwriter’s style on display and allowed students to experience her magic in person.

“It was a memorable evening, and we were grateful for the time she spent with our students and for the opportunity our students had to work alongside her team to bring the exhibition to life,” said university spokesperson, Kim Chaudoin. “Dolly gave so much to Tennessee and the world around her. We are grateful that Lipscomb had the opportunity to be a small part of her remarkable story.”

The exhibit remains open to students.

In Elam Hall, Resident Assistant Shiloah Paxton has set up a corner of her floor to be decorated with a Parton theme. It even includes a life-size cutout or Parton. 

Freshman Briley Upchurch was one of the many students impact by Parton. “Dolly inspired me as a designer to just find my own voice,” said Upchurch. “I didn’t have to conform to the styles of this world because who you are is uniquely you.” 

“To me her passing was like losing a family member that I’ve never met,” continued Upchurch. “Dolly is one of those people who is friends with everybody, and she has inspired so many people in a sense of confidence and just being who you are.”

Although Parton has passed, Lipscomb will continue to remember Parton for her impact on the university.
