Double header, double win

Lipscomb men’s and women’s basketball teams played a double header on Sunday in Allen Arena.

The afternoon started with the Lipscomb women’s basketball team defeating the Tennessee State Tigers 63-55. TSU took a 24-38 lead at the half, but the Bisons made a comeback in the fourth quarter to take the lead and win the game.

With 11 blocked shots in the game, freshmen guard Hope Counts set a new Lipscomb record. The previous record was set in 2011 by Jess Reece with seven. Other key players in the game included senior guard Molly Heard with 16 points, junior guard Elena Bertrand with 14 points, junior guard McKayla Miller with ten points and Counts with nine points.

The Lady Bisons’ overall record is now 3-6 and they will take on Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana, at 10 a.m on December 11.

Following the women’s game, the men’s basketball team took on Alabama A&M, defeating them 92-58. The victory over the Bulldogs was the fifth-straight win for the Bisons of the season. Lipscomb extended their record to six wins and four losses for the season.

Player of the game, freshmen forward Kennedy Okpara, scored a career high of 17 points. Of Okpara’s points, 80% of the points were scored by shooting.

Other notable players included graduate student forward Grant Asman with 15 points, redshirt junior guard Mateo Esmeraldo with 14 points and redshirt junior guard Ethan Duncan with 12 points.

Next, the men’s basketball team will take on none other than Duke in Durham, North Carolina, on December 16 at 5 p.m.
