Lipscomb Academy hires Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Mawae to be its head coach
Ever since Lipscomb Academy’s 42-0 state championship victory over Christ Presbyterian Academy on Dec. 1st, speculation has swirled about who the Mustangs’ next head coach would be. Today, the Lipscomb community finally received the confirmation it had been waiting to see. Lipscomb Academy officially announced the highly anticipated hiring of Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Mawae as the next head coach of the football program. The announcement comes 55 days after former Mustangs head coach Trent Dilfer accepted an offer from the University of Alabama at Birmingham to become its next head coach. In Dilfer’s four seasons at Lipscomb Academy, the Mustangs compiled a 44-10 record while making three…

Men’s Basketball shows upward trajectory in win over Bellarmine
Just over two weeks ago, Lipscomb sat in the basement of the ASUN, but as Lennie Acuff’s program enters the heart of league play it has plenty of reason for hope. The Bisons encountered a litmus test today and passed with flying colors in its 69-49 win over Bellarmine at Allen Arena. “At this time of year you’re obviously concerned with your record, but you’re more concerned with the direction you’re going and I think our trajectory is up,” Acuff said. It felt like Lipscomb had this one under control for most of the afternoon. Coach Lennie Acuff’s team went on a 12-0 run midway through the first half and…

Men’s basketball claims statement victory
The Lipscomb Bisons wrapped up an exciting night at Allen Arena with a 75-62 victory over the top team in the ASUN, Eastern Kentucky Colonels. The day started with the usual posts about game day, but head coach Lennie Acuff and his team wanted to make sure people knew to come out. The squad headed over to the Bennett Campus Center and Bison Square, and all afternoon they handed out Lipscomb basketball shirts to get the students excited for tonight. Despite the help from the large student section that packed its part of Allen Arena, Lipscomb struggled to get any offense going. The scoring drought lasted the first four minutes…

Men’s basketball takes down Louisville on the road in fearless performance
For the first time in 1,364 days, Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team emerged from a contest against a Power 5 opponent with more than moral victories or positive signs; it left with a win. Head Coach Lennie Acuff secured the first victory over a Power 5 opponent of his career Tuesday night in Lipscomb’s 75-67 win over Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center. “I’m real proud of our guys,” Acuff said. “It’s a great win for Lipscomb. “It’s exciting,” the fourth-year coach added. “I’ve done it a long time, but I’d be less than honest if I said I wasn’t excited.” Lipscomb’s first basket was a sign of things to come; senior…

Late jumper gives men’s basketball dramatic victory over TTU
The Lipscomb men’s basketball team beat the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 64-63 Wednesday night in a matchup which included 10 lead changes. After two consecutive road losses, the Bisons rebounded in a revenge game from last year’s matchup against its foe. Graduate center Ahsan Asadullah started the game strong on the offensive end with five rebounds and four points within the first six minutes of the game. The Bisons would take a five-point lead within that span, the largest of the half. After a slight comeback by the Golden Eagles to cut the lead to one, A.J. McGinnis, a Cincinnati transfer, finished a Bisons possession with a three-pointer in front…

Men’s basketball shows positive signs in loss to Tennessee State
Lipscomb fought but fell late in a 90-85 loss to cross-town opponent, Tennessee State, at the Gentry Center. The loss moves the Bisons to 2-2 in contests against in-town opponents. Sophomore forward Jacob Ognacevic led the Bisons with 19 points in their 85-point outing. Acuff has recently enjoyed the idea of two-big lineups and made it clear in his starting lineup that included forwards Matt Schner, Jacob Ognacevic, and Ahsan Asadullah. Tennessee State scored within seconds of the opening tip on a Christian Brown transition layup, Brian Collins’ team followed that up by forcing the Bisons into a turnover. That theme continued throughout the first half as the Tigers got…

Battle ends in defeat: a close game but a sad end
The Bisons were ready. They had a chance to take the Battle of the Boulevard win from the Belmont Bruins. And if they did, they would have beaten the Bruins in both men’s and women’s basketball, a miraculous year. The Bruins were ready too. They were not about to let the Bisons embarrass them again. The stage was set. The Battle was about to begin.

Belmont beats women’s basketball in local rivalry
In a hard-fought contest, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team fell by a score of 77-68 to close geographical rival Belmont. After seeing the Lipscomb men win on a thrilling buzzer-beater from Jacob Ognacevic almost a month ago, it was the women’s turn to host the Bruins. In a reversal of Lipscomb’s improbable win on the men’s side in November, the home team was unable to complete a late-game comeback on this occasion. The win for Belmont pushes them to a record of 26-6 all-time in NCAA Division I matchups between the two, reflecting a significant advantage in the women’s iteration of the closest rivalry in NCAA Division I college basketball.…

Frontcourt shows out, men’s basketball blows out Trevecca
The Lipscomb men’s basketball team beat in-city opponent Trevecca Nazarene 87-49 at Allen Arena, making quick work of the NCAA Division II Trojans. Lennie Acuff has been no stranger to scheduling non-conference games against local opponents, and that trend continued in Monday evening’s contest. Trevecca is located just 5.4 miles from Allen Arena and is the former home of Bisons forward Hank Hutcheson. Hutcheson played 12 minutes and scored two points in Lipscomb’s 87-49 victory at Allen Arena. The win moves the Bisons’ record to 6-2 in total and 5-0 on their home floor. Lipscomb was led by a season-high 24 points from Jacob Ognacevic. Ahsan Asadullah and Grant Asman…

Women’s Battle of the Boulevard approaches
With the days counting down to the Women’s Basketball Battle of the Boulevard, expectations build on Lipscomb’s campus. Last year Lipscomb sadly lost to the Belmont Bruins 67-62, but after the Men’s spectacular turnaround and defeat of the Bruins this season on November 14th, there is hope rising on campus. Lipscomb has not beaten Belmont in Women’s Basketball since the 2011 Battle of the Boulevard, but the last two Battles have been close. Belmont won last year 67-62, and the 2019 Battle was a mere one point game, Belmont winning 69-68. On top of the close last two games, the Women’s roster has changed since last year’s Battle, with only…
