Bisons drop 1-0 to North Florida on Halloween Senior Night

On a chilly, eerie Saturday Halloween night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team closed out its 2026 campaign with a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to the University of North Florida.

Before kickoff under the autumn lights, the program honored seven figures during its Senior Night ceremony: graduate defender Nathan Starzl, senior goalkeeper Noah Kump, redshirt junior defender Tony Lombardi, senior midfielder Tyler Stinnett, redshirt junior defender Caleb Davis, and redshirt senior midfielder Patrick Walz. Also honored was former Bisons player defender Yuushin Nakagawa, who officially announced his medical retirement after two years of intensive rehabilitation following a severe knee injury sustained in October 2023.

Despite the holiday atmosphere and high emotion, a 75th-minute strike from North Florida’s senior midfielder Mark Romano proved to be the decisive blow, officially eliminating Lipscomb from postseason contention as the ASUN Championship bracket was finalized.

The Bisons found themselves under early pressure as North Florida came out aggressive. In the 10th minute, UNF junior forward Kaiss Mansouri forced redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Kara into action, making back-to-back saves to keep the match level.

North Florida nearly conjured some Halloween magic in the 21st minute when senior midfielder Ugo Bertelli created space on the attack. Bertelli unleashed a right-footed strike from distance that beat the keeper but rattled directly off the post, coming inches short of giving the Ospreys the opening goal.

As the match grew increasingly physical in midfield, North Florida’s junior midfielder Yurok Cho was booked for a hard shirt pull on redshirt sophomore midfielder Luke Hanlon in the 37th minute. Both sides went into halftime at 0-0.

The physical battle escalated in the second half. With 24 minutes remaining in regulation, Kara delivered his highlight moment of the night, leaping to make a crucial one-handed denial on a venomous strike from Mansouri. Kara ended the night with six total saves.

Lipscomb pushed forward for the game-winner, coming close in the 75th minute. Sophomore defender Yohan Franchi connected on a header, but Ospreys graduate goalkeeper Luciano Natoli reacted quickly to pull off the save.

North Florida immediately capitalized on the counterattack. Mansouri slipped a pass to Romano, who struck a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give UNF a 1-0 lead. The play was placed under video review for a potential offside call, but after a short delay, the goal was upheld.

The Bisons threw numbers forward in the final 15 minutes, subbing on Lombardi and freshman forward James Sasere, but the Ospreys’ backline held firm until the final whistle.

Head Coach Charles Morrow reflected on the difficult outcome and the journey of his squad after the match.

“It’s a tough game, a tough season, in that just too many times we came up just short,” Morrow said. “I like the group. I think that this group, if they stick together, they can have a lot of success in future years. There’s enough talent in the group. This will be a big learning year for them.”

Morrow highlighted how small details made the difference across the campaign.

“I think that they learned this year that small details win and lose games,” Morrow added. “It’s a year to learn that a collective togetherness can beat individual talent. I’m excited about the work. It’s a young group, and I think that the future’s bright for them.”

Morrow also expressed deep gratitude for the senior class leaving the program.

“You just appreciate the seniors so much in terms of everything they’ve done and given to this program,” Morrow said.“They’ll be missed, but always welcome back.”
