ASA hosts Afrobeats Invasion

The African Students Association is determined to bring good vibes to Lipscomb’s campus.

Last night from 6-8, African Student Association (ASA) members invited their peers to join them for Afrobeats music, food and fun. “We want to invade campus with good vibes, good energy and show everyone a good time,” said Ayub Ali, ASA’s president.

ASA’s Afrobeats Invasion was part of Lipscomb’s Welcome to Our World (WOW) week. During this annual tradition, the Office of Intercultural Development collaborates with student organizations to showcase Lipscomb’s diverse student body.

Afrobeats is just one of ASA’s many on-campus events highlighting African culture. “Our whole mission statement is to educate Lipscomb students on the African diaspora. Africa is a pretty big continent, so we try to have events throughout the semester to highlight everybody,” Ali smiled.

Ali acknowledged the challenge of representing all the diverse African cultures that exist on Lipscomb’s campus. “Other schools usually have sub associations, like Ethiopian Student Associations, but with ASA, we kind of have to make sure everyone gets heard and appreciated,” Ali said.

Last night’s event highlighted Nigeria’s Independence Day, which Nigerians celebrate on October 1st. “We’re celebrating pretty late, but we’re celebrating,” Ali laughed. Other ASA events have included a soccer tournament and an Afro-Latino night in partnership with RAICES.

ASA helps Lipscomb students find community. “Our main goal here on campus is just to make sure everyone feels at home. We have a big international student population, and we want everyone to feel welcome,” said Ali.

WOW week gives Lipscomb students the opportunity to learn about groups like ASA. The events will continue tonight with RAICES jeopardy, and will culminate with the International Fashion Show at 6 p.m. on Friday in Shamblin Theater.
