AASA celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival with mooncakes

On Wednesday, Lipscomb’s Asian American Student Association (AASA) celebrated the coming of the fall season with a Mooncake Festival. 

The Mid-August tradition is prominent in China, but many Asian countries celebrate the first harvest with a family reunion festival. Mooncakes represent harmony and reunion, and many Asian families came together to eat the sweet dessert on September 25th. 

True to mid-Autumn tradition, Lipscomb’s celebration was held on September 25th. The Office of Intercultural Development decorated their office with banners and origami, and the AASA served snacks and drinks common to the fall season.  Students played board games and enjoyed moon cakes, the main snack served during the tradition.

One of the AASA’s goals is to promote different Asian traditions. President Marielle Guarin said she is  determined to have more events that highlight lesser-known traditions. “We strive to promote different cultures and events,” said Guarin.

One student at the event, Olivia Harding, had never tried a moon cake before. “I actually really enjoyed it,” Harding said. “It honestly tasted like a cake with a jelly filling.”
