Lipscomb University remembers the impact and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Lipscomb University gathered to celebrate the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. William Turner, distinguished professor and special counsel to the president for diversity, belonging and unity coordinated the space for faculty and staff to reflect.

“Well this is our third year doing it. We felt like it was really important for us as a university faculty and staff to come together once a year to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He has been such an inspiration to so many people in this world and has made such a huge difference in how we
think about our interactions with one another. So each year what we’ve tried to do is to look at one of his writings, a quote of something that he said.”

According to Dr. Turner, this year’s quote focused on service, a core value in Dr. King’s legacy

“One of life’s most persistent questions is how do we serve others and so it really is a quote about being called to service, that all of us should be more oriented toward helping our fellow human being.”

The featured speaker was former state representative, senior advisor to the governor and a current pastor in Memphis, John Deberry. Deberry reflected on how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. impacted his life journey. Telling the stories of his father and his journey as a young man during the Dr. King era.

Dr. Turner wants the Lipscomb community to feel encouraged.

“I just hope everybody will really be encouraged that they will redouble their efforts to create Lipscomb as an environment where all people belong and that and they feel like this is a place of belonging.”
