Lipscomb Updates Alcohol Policy: Grants Off-Campus Drinking Privileges

Lipscomb University recently updated its alcohol policy to permit students aged 21 and older to consume alcohol off-campus, provided they return to campus sober and remain responsible.

This change marks a shift from previous rules, which prohibited alcohol consumption and possession for all students, regardless of age or location. However, the university remains dedicated to maintaining a safe, substance-free campus in alignment with its Church of Christ values.
The 2024-2025 student handbook clarifies that “Intoxication is prohibited for all members of the Lipscomb community, regardless of age, on and off campus at all times,” and that “Alcohol possession and/or consumption is prohibited on campus … [and] at any Lipscomb-sponsored event or program, including global learning programs and travel experiences.”

Additionally, “Any Underage Student suspected of consuming alcohol may be asked to submit to a breathalyzer test, and any Lipscomb student suspected of intoxication may be asked to submit to a breathalyzer test.”
Kim Chaudoin, assistant vice president of public relations and communications, explained the reasoning behind the update:
“The initial recommendation to update the alcohol policy was made two years ago to align more closely with policies at other Christian universities,” Chaudoin said.

“After reviewing peer institutions’ policies, we decided to update the policy while reiterating that Lipscomb remains a dry campus where alcohol is not allowed on campus or at any university-sponsored events, including study abroad programs.”

Dr. Brian Mast, interim executive vice president, added context on how the policy reflects Lipscomb’s mission and values:

“This policy provides clarity,” said Dr. Brian Mast.

“Lipscomb University is committed to an alcohol- and drug-free campus that aligns with its Christ-centered mission and higher standards for conduct. Lipscomb believes that each person’s body is a temple of God and should be treated with respect.”

While the revised policy accommodates responsible behavior for students of legal drinking age, it reinforces Lipscomb’s commitment to a safe and substance-free environment. The revised student handbook found on Lipscomb University’s website will detail disciplinary measures for policy violations and encourage students to use ride services for safe returns to campus.
