Singarama: A Lipscomb Tradition that continues to leave its legacy

This year’s Singarama theme perfectly represents and encompasses what we have seen in the past year’s social and cultural milieu. In the year of the beloved era tour, the decision to theme 2024’s Singarama: The Lipscomb Eras was a simple choice.

Senior accounting major and 2024 Singarama Director Audra Hochesang sat down for a closing interview after completing the three shows.

“I have been doing Singarama for three years and have loved every second. Being a director has always been at the back of my mind, but I never thought it would be an opportunity in the future.” Hochesang said.

However, this year, the opportunity did present itself to Ms. Hochesang. No one wanted the role in Delta Omega, so she stepped up and took the lead. This turned out to be a spur-of-the-moment choice that will positively impact her for the rest of her life.

I asked Ms. Hochesang what the process of being a director was like. She explained that the director does everything; it is genuinely so much work but so rewarding.

It all starts with a theme. Their group was assigned to the 1980s era, so Ms. Hochesang and her co-director went to work scouring old yearbooks to find an exciting time in Lipscomb’s past. Upon their search, they discovered that the men’s Basketball Team won the NIA tournament in the 1980s. With that news, they discovered the vision.

“From there, you assemble a few different teams: choreography, writing, and costume to provide them with the inspiration and direction of the production,” said Ms. Hochesang.

“Being a director has a large workload, and you never feel like it will come together. Then it does, and it’s amazing.”

Ms. Hochesang said, “Show week brings the best feelings and emotions to the entire experience. Everyone is exhausted, getting no sleep, and behind on their homework, but it establishes a sense of unity that is epic! It is truly so much fun. It brings together people you wouldn’t typically be friends with and builds a great community.”

Ms. Hochesangs’s hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, as she was awarded this year’s Williard Collins award. This award goes to someone who enjoys excellent leadership skills and a great attitude and is voted on by all cast members. “I am so thankful that I got to experience this opportunity and be a part of Singarama for four years. It was the highlight of my college experience!”
