Freshmen win Halloweek dodgeball tournament

Lipscomb University students faced off in the annual Halloweek dodgeball tournament at Fanning Hall, continuing one of the university’s long-standing traditions.

This year’s tournament, themed “Thriller Throwdown,” featured teams dressed in creative costumes competing in a bracket-style competition. Students crowded Fanning’s courtyard and balconies, cheering on teams and friends.

The game took place inside the tournament’s signature cage setup, giving the event its classic look as dodgeballs flew across the court and bounced off the metal fencing.

Teams included Team McQueen, Men of God, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Elixir Addicts, Willie the Pooh, Team P.G.A. and Code Blue, along with several others competing.

For the first time, Student Government Association Executive President Lydia Knobloch participated in the tournament, representing SGA as “The Judges.”  “I wanted something that related to SGA to kind of embody what we’re about, so we came to the consensus to be judges,” Knobloch said.

The tournament was intense as players dove for balls and jumped to avoid being hit, but Elixir Addicts, a team of freshmen dressed as Clash Royale characters, won the championship. “They sent us through the gauntlet of great teams and we just came out on top,” said Maddox Douldin, a member of Elixir Addicts. “It was awesome.”

Douldin said the team didn’t expect to win but enjoyed the competition. “Definitely not,” he said. “I’m ready to take a shower.”

Knobloch said the atmosphere is what makes the event so special. “I just love the environment,” she said. “There’s nothing like Fanning dodgeball anywhere else.”

After an evening of costumes, competition and cheers echoing through Fanning Hall, students walked away with tired arms, big smiles and another Halloweek memory.
